My Picture

Welcome to my profile!

Man by violating his own feelings becomes cruel. And how deeply seated in the human heart is the injunction not to take life. - Leo Tolstoy I'm all about animal rights, however, I don't really get to involve in activism (mostly do to my geography). I'm also a feminist but I relate more to the old time feminists - I hate a lot of the gender specific clothing and make-up. I think a lot of women are held hostage by the pressure to dress to impress and to cover up their faces on a daily basis and I feel really bad for them. I have been make-up free since 2000 and am proud of it! I think a lot of women would find out that they don't look all that different without it. I hate bras - I call them "patriarchal harnesses", I HATE highHELLS - which I think are really designed to cripple female backs so men can keep claiming to be the stronger sex. I've had a lot of women in my life PUSH gender specific clothing/behavior on me and I'm not impressed. It's one thing for women to feel comfortable in such clothing and quite another to try and force other women to do it to. I honestly think women feel threatened by me because my presence sort of forces them to reevaluate everything they do - from the clothes they wear to the hours spent on "perfecting" their reflection. I connect with animal much more than human beings and I tend to connect with men more because I'm more into stereotypically masculine things. I like building things, working with wood, hiking, biking, snowboarding, skateboarding, lifting weights (I want to be a body builder but my metabolism tends to get in the way!). I like fixing things and love using tools. I'm a master upholsterer and as far as I know - I'm the only vegan upholsterer around. I also love to paint and draw and I play the mandolin. I love to read and would love to talk with people who are into reading. I read a lot of snotty intellectual shit (if you couldn't tell by my intro quote) - I'm almost finished with Crime and Punishment and I absolutely LOVE it. I would also be interested in some recommendations (with descriptions please!)

Animal Rights

Which philosophy do you like most?? Animal Rights

Are you familiar with "vegan abolitionists" or the philosophy of Gary L. Francione?? I am a vegan abolitionist.

Do you call yourself an "Animal Rights Activist"?? Yes, I do

Are you a member of an animal rights group?? Not really. I use to do a lot more but in this area, it's hard to organise people (I'm like the only vegan I know). I started a group at my old campus but that died off as soon as I finished school.

Who is your favorit animal rights speaker or writer?? Gary Francione

What do you think about breeding animal companions or zoo animals?? NOT COOL! I'm not opposed to sanctuaries that do research in the ecosystems animals atctually come from to help endangered species.

What do you think about vivisection?? Disgusting and a waste of time. I think that animal testing is pseudoscience. We are no other animals, just like they are not like us. While many of their organs may be similar - they aren't the same. Many human beings have died because certain drugs have been considered safe for non-human animals. Also - humans live much MUCH longer than the animals we test on, so there is no way to know for sure what the long term affect will have on a human being.

What do you think about factory farming?? Is this a joke question? I'm vegan aren't I! I also think small farms are horrible - they still slaughter animals waaaaaaaay before they are old and male calves/chickens are still killed and unwanted because they don't produce any kind of "product."

What do you think about hunting and fishing?? I think fishing is bad - especially sea fishing. Our oceans are already depleted of fish. I'm not as against hunting but I still think it sucks. I'd rather see someone hunt than keep animals in captivity. It's not so much the death of an animal I want to prevent but I wish to prevent an animal from suffering while it is alive. But either way - it's still violent, and I believe in ahimsa.

What do you think about fur?? eeeeeeeeeeeeeeew, tacky! Even the fake stuff is tacky! I would never wear it and I would treat anyone who is wearing it like the scum of the earth.

What animal rights issue is the most urgent according to you?? Prolly factory farming and animal testing but I think in gerneral - all animals need our elp.

Favorite animal rights books? Vegan with a Vengence and Asian Vegan Living. Those are the only two I have ever read. I don't know why but I guess I already know a lot about animal rights, why read things I already know?

What to read?

Date 01/09/09 06:08 Date 0 Icon 773
I honestly only read a lot of intellectually snotty shit and I'm sort of interested in finding out about more authors that write such things. I've read Voltaire (Candide - I still think this would make an AWESOME movie, if done right of course), Leo Tolstoy (War and Peace, Anna Karenina, as well as many MANY of his short stories), Plato, Fyoder Dosteovsky (Crime and Punishent, Notes From Underground), Gandhi, Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, Mark Twain, Jack London (I know this seems weird ...
